State of the Union

"The same is true of Iran, a nation now held hostage by a small clerical elite that is isolating and repressing its people. The regime in that country sponsors terrorists in the Palestinian territories and in Lebanon--and that must come to an end. The Iranian government is defying the world with its nuclear ambitions--and the nations of the world must not permit the Iranian regime to gain nuclear weapons. America will continue to rally the world to confront these threats. And tonight, let me speak directly to the citizens of Iran: America respects you, and we respect your country. We respect your right to choose your own future and win your own freedom. And our Nation hopes one day to be the closest of friends with a free and democratic Iran."

George W. Bush

Unlike the past years...President Bush didn't say... War on Terror but Islamic radicals... this is very important especially with the fact that a group of terrorists take revenge for their lack of compassion for humanity... and all the bloodshed in the name of Islam!!

The Iranian hardliners and reformists are two sides of one coin! It was during Khatmi's presidency, a hard at heart reformist, when the Iranian university students were attacked, Ganji was sentenced, and the Forouhars were killed!

When Iran's Supreme leader is MISTAKE-PROOF BY DESIGN!

Elham Afrotan, a writer ... was arrested on charges of IRI law violation and disrespecting the late supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini. Afrootan is awaiting trial for having published unauthorized material on Tamdon-e Hormozgan (a community based rural newspaper,) and comparing Khomeini to the aids virus! On another note... last night I read on this blog that the original note was written by him... and Ms. Afrootan had misunderstood the concept and printed it as a scientific article.

Crisis Alert

The new regime in Tehran (symbolized by Ahmadinejad's presidency) has its base in a generational (mini) wave that gained its experience during the Iran-Iraq war. It is a mini-wave because the represented time span is rather small in demographic scales. The revolution’s first generation represented by Rafsanjani, Khamenei, and many exile figures are on the way out. As such I doubt the traditional leaders of IRI (e.g. Rafsanjani) despite their wealth and influence can pose any serious challenge to the new rulers as asserted by Michael McFaul and Abbas Milani in Washington Post.

Crisis Alert

"one thing that is always overlooked in all analyses is the role of the army (artesh). The army will stay politically neutral as it has during the past 27 years. However if the more ideologically oriented armed forces crumble for any reason (including strikes by the US) the army has the potential to step in and end the conflict. That could be our winning card." and "Read the Iran policy recommendations of the Committee on the Present Danger. One of the most interesting recommendations is creation of an international tribunal to try the Islamic Republic leadership. The massacre of the political prisoners in 1988 will most likely qualify as a crime to be considered by such tribunal. This is an area where the exile opposition can make a huge difference."

Left Aside

So why is there no campaign in Western universities to treat the Islamic Republic like Apartheid South Africa or post-Intifadah Israel? Instead of proposing divestment from the European energy concerns that continue to profit from Iran's rich oil and gas fields, the majority of the left is convinced President Bush secretly intends to invade a country his diplomats have made a silent partner in rebuilding Iraq and Afghanistan.

Partial translation: Mojtaba Sami'i Nejad (Saminejad), an imprisoned blogger, accompanied with two prison guards, with handcuffs, was permitted to write one of his final exams. He is a student in social communications, in Azad University (Tehran). He couldn't write the first three of his final exams because of the shortcomings of the people in charge. He was not allowed to sit with the other students for the final exam. He had to write it in a separate room, while he was still handcuffed. He was returned after the exam to prison. He is supposed to write the other two finals remaining in the next few days. The silence of the media on his arrest and imprisonment, lead to his stay for a year and a half in prison (88 days in solitary confinement) without even one day of leave. He was arrested and charged because of writing in his weblog, and criticizing and insulting the supreme leader.

To display Iran, a model country for poverty and oppression of civilians, we dress up its nuclear power plans as the showstopper on the runway!

One of my readers whom I have come to know, is an Iranian woman residing in Canada. She is a PhD in mathematics education. I asked for her permission to post parts of her e-mail on my blog...
Iran Verses United States and Iran verses Israel!

"We had some guests over for lunch. One of the gusts started talking about Ahmadinejad and why he thinks that Ahmadinejad is better than Bush (well this was not a surprise) and why he thinks that Ahmadinejad is a logical, reasonable person and he kept praising him for being strong... This blew my mind! Ahmadinejad being logical? Being strong... Being logical? Being true to Iran? If Israel had nukes, we should have it too, he said... America doesn't have democracy... It is like Iran but not much better he said... I was getting mad... I pleaded to my lefties friends; I said say something to this man but in reply they said well... he is right, why should Israel have the nuke? We should have it too... they agreed that US has a bit of democracy though! But their hate for Israel is so strong that they like Ahmadinejad!!!! Anti-Semitics! These are some Iranian intellectuals for god's sake. What should we do dear Sheema? Why are these people blind to the facts? It seems as if they have some sort of paralysis of intellect. They look and smell and talk like intellectuals, but their ideas are bizarrely out of date and not updateable!"

Middle East: as delicious as the fresh baked bread is to the hungry eyes

  • Tonight while watching Walking the Bible: A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses, I thought regardless of the hardship I have experienced because of being an Iranian ... I am happy to have the word "Iran" stamped as my birthplace, to be able to speak Persian. There is something majestic and magical in being from the Middle East something like when the heart trembles with desire or love, something unknown to the rest of the world, something as delicious as the fresh baked bread is to the hungry eyes.

  • A new opinion poll in Afghanistan is very revealing. 83% of Afghans say their country is moving in the right direction. 81% of Afghans view the US favorably, with 83% approving of US troop presence in-country. Meanwhile 88% have an unfavorable view of the Taliban, 82% think overthrowing them was a good thing, and (drum roll) 90% view Osama bin Laden unfavorably, with 75% of that total being "very unfavorable."
Protesting against the mistreatment of political prisoners in Iran

"Political prisoners in Iran live in the worst of conditions. Many of them have lost function in parts of their bodies as a result of the medieval tortures. The prisoners are constantly harassed, their cells raided and their belongings are looted regularly. Many political prisoners are kept in solitary confinements for prolonged periods. The Iranian government accepts no responsibility to provide food, medical care and even security for the lives of the political prisoners. Political prisoners Afshin Baimani, Valiyollah Feyz-Mahdavi, Amir Hossein Heshmat Saran, Arjan g Davoodi, Yaser Majidi, Heydar Noroozi, Hojjat Zamani, Asad Shaghaghi, Behrooz Javid Tehrani, Mehrdad Lohrasbi and Alireza Karam Kheyrabadi have gone on hunger strike to protest the inhumane treatment of the political prisoners in Iran and demand an inspection of the prisons in Iran by an International Committee."

But this is a mafia war that could widen to involve real armies in Syria, Lebanon, Israel and even distant Iran.

What makes the Syria-Lebanon situation especially volatile, Jumblatt explained, is that it is linked to the radical new Iranian regime of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He argued that Iran is using its alliance with Assad and Hezbollah in its larger strategic battles against Israel and the United States. "It's as if we are defending Iranian nuclear facilities from the border of Lebanon," he said.
